From the Welshpool 10K and meetings held by the British Deer Society to the Severn Valley Welsh Pony & Cob Association Annual Show, Powis Estates have played host to a wide range of events over the years. If you’re looking for something to do this summer in Ludlow or around Welshpool and Montgomery, then keep reading to find out about all the family-friendly days that are planned for 2023.

1. Welshpool Country Music Festival, 13th–16th July 2023

Situated in the Powis Castle Showfield with views over the Severn Valley, step back in time to the Wild West at the Welshpool Country Music Festival. Along with a long lineup of artists, you can test your reflexes in a quick draw contest for a chance to win the £100 bounty, witness living history with re-enactment groups, and watch gripping performances by Nula Hula

As for food and drink, Mukaase Afro-Caribbean Foods will be serving up a menu of spicy African and Caribbean delights, while No Bones Jones will offer delicious vegan and vegetarian food from their solar-powered food stand. For those camping with weekend tickets, the Saloon Stage and bar will offer plenty of musical entertainment and refreshments into the small hours of the morning. This one-of-a-kind festival is all in aid of the Heulwen Trust, a local charity dedicated to providing boat trips to those less abled. While there, why not check out the National Trust’s Powis Castle just up the road from the show field? Anyone in Western dress will gain half-price admission.

2. Within The Walls at Ludlow Castle, 20th–23rd July 2023

A series of live music events taking place within the historic walls of Ludlow Castle, the Estate is thrilled to be hosting several world-class artists this summer. Rag’n’Bone Man will be starting things off on Thursday night followed by Kaiser Chiefs on Friday, while Nile Rodgers & Chic take centre stage on Saturday. Bastille will be wrapping up the festival on the Sunday as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of their multi-platinum debut album, ‘Bad Blood’.

Once a Royal Castle which was home to Kings, Princes and Princesses, Ludlow Castle has stories of siege and conflict as well as love and betrayal dating back to the 11th century and will make a striking backdrop for a truly unique experience. Ticketholders will be able to take in the grandeur and history of this impressive heritage property while also witnessing a new chapter in its history.

All tickets for this year’s Within The Walls events are now sold out. View other upcoming events at Ludlow Castle or sign up for their newsletter to be among the first to find out about new events.

3. Montgomery Show, 19th August 2023

Taking place on the Montgomery Show Field, the Montgomery Show has been an annual highlight for the local community since 1895. Each year, the show delivers plenty of entertainment and family-friendly fun for visitors and locals alike, while also raising money for the mayor’s chosen charities.

This summer, the show schedule includes a carnival commencing from Broad Street at 12:15pm, with both walkers and floats making their way to the show field. Once there, you can find sports day races, classic vehicles, companion dog shows and more. There will also be exhibits ranging from horticultural and floral art to photography and handicrafts, which you can enter for a small entry fee of 50p until 10:00 am on the morning of the show.

So if you’re looking for a day of good food, good drink and great company, keep Saturday 19th August 2023 free to join us at the Montgomery Show. While there, why not pay a visit to The Old Bell Museum, too?

4. Ludlow Food Festival, 8th–10th September 2023

For the gourmets among us, Ludlow Food Festival is the place to be. Known as the original festival for food and drink lovers, this weekend will be a celebration of culinary delights.

Each day, the main stages will play host to a full schedule of talks and demonstrations from chefs, producers and authors, including those taking place on the Live Fire Cooking Stage. While exploring the rest of the festival, you can find workshops, masterclasses and free kids’ activities to enjoy, along with over 100 exhibitors from around Ludlow and the Welsh Marches.

Should you find yourself making lots of purchases to take back to your own kitchen, then head to the entrance where you can leave your bags at the charity-run shopping crèche. Taking place at the historic Ludlow Castle, this will be a fantastic weekend for gastronomes and budding chefs alike.
