As September approaches, our Estate Director, Jack Tavernor, is preparing to take on one of world’s most demanding endurance events, the Dragon’s Back Race, which takes place from 7 to 12 September 2026.
This will be Jack’s second participation in the renowned race, having first taken part in the challenge two years ago. His return reflects both a personal commitment to endurance sport and a deep appreciation for the Welsh landscapes through which the route passes.
The Dragon’s Back Race follows the mountainous spine of Wales, covering approximately 380 kilometres over six days, with around 16,400 metres of ascent. Traversing terrain from North Wales to the capital, it is widely regarded as one of the toughest mountain races in the world, demanding exceptional levels of physical endurance, navigation, self-reliance and resilience.
For Powis Estates, the race holds particular significance. As a Welsh Estate with longstanding connections to the countryside and communities of Wales, we recognise the importance of events that celebrate the nation’s landscapes, heritage and spirit of endeavour. The route passes through some of Wales’ most celebrated upland scenery, highlighting the natural beauty and character that have shaped generations of people who live and work here.
Over the coming weeks, Jack will continue his preparations for the challenge, balancing training with his responsibilities leading the management and stewardship of the Estate.
Reflecting on his decision to return, Jack said:
“The Dragon’s Back Race is unlike any other challenge I’ve experienced. The physical demands are considerable, but it is the privilege of travelling through the length of Wales on foot, seeing its landscapes change day by day, that stays with you long after the finish. I’m looking forward to returning and putting myself to the test once again.”
As the event draws nearer, everyone at Powis Estates is pleased to support Jack in his preparations and wishes him every success for the journey ahead. His participation reflects values that resonate strongly with the Estate: perseverance, respect for the landscape and a lasting connection to the rich heritage of Wales.
