Powis Estates are excited to share the latest news in our story of safeguarding the Pearl-Bordered Fritillary Butterfly here on the Estate.

We already work closely with the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust to safeguard 25 hectares of butterfly habitat for the pearl-bordered fritillary across our estate. Now our tenants, Welshpool Golf Club, have partnered with Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust on a new project to care for an additional 91 hectares of the rich biodiversity within our landscape.

We are delighted that the new project, named ‘Welshpool Fairway to Haven’, has been awarded £170,000 from the Welsh Government’s Local Places for Nature Challenge Fund, to not only create new butterfly habitats for the Pearl-Bordered Fritillary but also further protect the diverse wildlife and natural environments on the Y Golfa Hill.

The project will enable more of the wild habitat to be managed, with improvements to access, maintained footpaths, and helping people get closer to the nature that’s on their doorstep, all year round.

An exciting launch event for the Welshpool Fairway to Haven project will be held at the Welshpool Golf Club on Sunday 4th February 2024, offering local residents the opportunity to find out more and get involved. Light refreshments will be served and there may also be a short walk out onto the course, weather permitting.
